The City of Murcia is described as one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the country, standing on the banks of the river Segura and enjoying almost all year round sunshine.Founded in 831AD by Abd-Al-Rahman II in the centre of the Segura river valley,Murcia still possesses the remnants of this Moorish rule which can be seen in the still-visible city wall, which contrasts strongly with the city's numerous churches.
As you wander through the city, there is a monumental building on every corner. Many are in pristine condition and those that aren't are being restored to their former glory. Many streets and squares are pedestrian, making Murcia a lovely city for walking, meeting up, discovering or rediscovering it everyday. With its great Baroque personality, and treats for the senses, the new city buildings contrast with those from other times to give the city a modernity which is harmonious with tradition. |

Murcia is also a university city and as such has a large student population. The university building is of huge proportions and demands time to examine closely its exterior. The area around the university has a wealth of lively bars and restaurants that are truly vibrant with life, although the city itself is not very cosmopolitan. It is more of a peaceful place to live and visit: lots of safe, pedestrian streets, very kind people, and not busy at all. The Murcians are taking great care of the town and the environment.
It is important to point out that one of the symbols of the city of Murcia chosen by its people is the Matron of Almudí (1575), a stone relief on the facade of this beautiful building of a woman feeding another child while her own child looks on. This image symbolises the hospitality of the city of Murcia with those from outside, with all of those who come to visit. |

The painter Ramón Gaya, to whom the city has dedicated a well-cared for and beautiful museum, says that "Murcia is Murcia and nothing more, she is distinguished by being herself and no other city or thing" |
