The Sierra Espuña National Park, is a natural space of great scenic beauty and enormous touristic interest, situated in the very centre of the region of Murcia about 25 minutes away from our properties.
A natural beauty spot of rugged green pine-clad mountainous countryside with stunning views, the park has varied plant & animal life such as wild boar, mountain cats and eagles and is a fantastic day out. There are plenty of picnic spots and stone barbeques for you to cook for yourself,and we wil supply you with a cool box for your trip,or you can eat in one of the Spanish restaurants there.
The heights above sea level vary from 200 metres in the areas closest to the Gaudalentín Valley and 1,585 metres at its highest point, the famous 'Pico Morrón' of Totana or Espuña. To the South of this peak you can find one of the other most interesting areas called Collao Bermejo at 1,200 metres, this area is a beautiful and popular place for mountain biking and hiking and there are plenty of single tracks and great marked trails to explore.
The climate in the Espuñas is temperate, with warm summers and cold winters which often leave snow on the highest mountains for much of the winter months.It is quite a novelty to see snow here in Spain and the little mountain roads make it a lovely trip out at this time of year. There are 26 great circular structures which date back to the end of
the 16th century and are known as the greatest Snow Well complexes or Las Pozos de Nieve. Every winter, brigades of workers from the surrounding towns, gathered snow and tamped it in the inside of the wells. These ice bars were used in the summer months to keep food cool and they were transported many kilometers away to towns such as Cartagena.
There are organised cycling or walking clubs such as Nature ESpuña Trails which are a perfect way to explore for the visitor and to get to know pople. Nature ESpuña Trails (NEST) are designed to provide an easy organised way to explore areas the Sierra Espuña that you probably wouldn't be able to find by yourself and that are particularly scenic or interesting. These walks are usually rounded off with a Spanish menu del dia at one of several different restaurants specially chosen for local authenticity, deliciousness, and good value.
